Predicting vs. Prophesying

I was never really interested in the prophecies of Nostradamus. I am not sure why such mysticism and magic never really interested me, especially when I believe that there is a lot more than meets the eye in this world and that the Spirit of Truth (the Holy Spirit)  interacts with all human beings in different ways. However, I was always of the mind that the best way to predict the future is to work and create it.  I admit that whenever I hear someone say, “God told them….” I perk up and want to hear it and test it.

Many of Nostradamus’ predications can only be fit into actual events if you really stretch them to fit (post-hoc reasoning!). For example, here is one of his most popular predictions that was supposed to be about Hitler:

From the depths of the West of Europe,
A young child will be born of poor people,

He who by his tongue will seduce a great troop;
His fame will increase towards the realm of the East…

Beasts ferocious with hunger will cross the rivers,
The greater part of the battlefield will be against Hister.
Into a cage of iron will the great one be drawn,
When the child of Germany observes nothing.

Hister? Hitler? While that one point might be interpretable as Hitler, maybe Hitler himself read it and decided that it was predicting him and therefore thought he had a supernatural calling to do what he did. Either way, it does not tell me a lot. There were a lot of young children born of poor people there who may have gone on to become orators. That quote could have even have predicted Diedrich Boenhoffer (except he was not trying to seduce anyone and during his time he was not “famous”).   Now, I admit that there may be other prophecies that Nostradamus has made that maybe closer to things that actual happened. I don’t claim to be a scholar of his work.

Baba Vanga, was another seer. She was a blind Bulgarian mystic, clairvoyant, and herbalist, who spent most of her life in the Rupite area in the Kozhuh mountains in Bulgaria. She had some interesting predictions that could be interpreted to mean they came true, like 9/11. Several of her predictions that did not come true  (thankfully) are:

  • The start of WWIII in 2010. The war will begin around November of 2010 and will end around October of 2014. Will start as a normal war, then will include usage of nuclear and chemical weapons.
  • Due to the radioactive showers in Northern Hemisphere in 2011 – animals and/or plants will die
  • Muslims will wage chemical war against Europeans/NATO around 2013.
  • China becomes the new world power around 2018  (they still want to be!)

Are all of the predictions on this site from an evil spirit? I do not know. Are they meant to confuse us? I confess, they have confused me! We need to be very wary of predictions that come that way.

When someone predicts the future in a church or as they did in the Bible, then it’s called prophesying.  Prophesying is not the same thing that Nostradamus and Baba Vanga did, even though it might have something to do with the future. Prophesying might come from a spirit as well, but it comes from the Holy Spirit.

Michael Yeager, CEO at Word Broadcasting Network offers these clues to listen for if a person is prophesying:

  1. It will never contradict scripture.
  2. You will know them by their fruits.
  3. The prophecy will lead you closer to God.
  4. It will produce righteousness and true holiness
  5. It will not glorify and exalt the one it is given to. (I would add, or the one giving it)
  6. At times it will encourage, but at times warn, correct and chastise (5&6 go together)
  7. Most true prophetic words will state the conditions for their fulfillment.
  8. Does the Prophet who is giving you this word have a good track record of fulfilled prophecies?
  9. It should bear witness in your heart, and with the Holy Ghost.
  10. Is the doctrinal beliefs of the giver of the prophecy living in line with biblical theology?
  11.  A true prophetic word will never deny the deity, authority of Jesus Christ.
  12. Always take what has been spoken over you before the Lord in prayer!

Are Nostradamus or Baba Vanga correct? Will their predictions come true? I don’t know. I don’t care. I prefer to make my own destiny through hard luck, determination, and faith. Is someone prophesying to me? I like Dr. Yeager’s criteria for testing the words and if the Lord is in your heart. I particularly like #9 as if someone is truly prophesying then it will touch the inside of your heart and/or be like sandpaper on it.

1 John 4:1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world
