Wake-Up Little Gen-Xers!

I remember hearing several older people in my life bemoaning how my generation has had it “easy”. We had no great war to fight. We had no real challenging moments. My generation is known as Generation X for this reason–we have no great event to define us. We certainly were allowed to experience an extended adolescence.

The film, Fight Club also contains a speech by Brad Pitt (as Tyler Durden) bemoaning this. He reminds us that…\

Man, I see in fight club the strongest and smartest men who’ve ever lived. I see all this potential, and I see squandering. God damn it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables; slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don’t need. We’re the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War’s a spiritual war… our Great Depression is our lives. We’ve all been raised on television to believe that one day we’d all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won’t . And we’re slowly learning that fact. And we’re very, very pissed off.

It certainly make me chuckle to see Brad Pitt say this. However, as true this is maybe to you, I do believe that we have a purpose and a we are in a war and yes, it is a spiritual and ideological war. I truly believe that we are in a war for the Judeo-Christian values that made our nation great. I do not believe anyone could reasonably argue otherwise. All you need to do is watch a news broadcast to see evidence of that. It definitely looks like we are losing that one. That is a war internal to the United States. Externally, there is one country that I think wants to go to war with us but knows that they would lose in a hot conflict. Their way of going around that is they have tried to poison us with the Coronavirus.

One could say that we are Generation Covid!

We are also in a spiritual war that is constantly waring in our souls for trusting the Lord and His Word. Now this war is not against other people but against spiritual forces in darkness (Ephesians 6:12). And no virus or complicity by our government to evil forces can stop us from knowing the Lord’s goodness in our lives. Yet we have to fight that spiritual war as if our lives depend on it, because they do. If you consider the ancient Israelites, their nation depended on it too–when they stopped following the Lord, the other nations invaded them and conquered them, completely. I believe that ultimately our nation will be invaded and conquered too, if we give up on the Lord. We are seeing that today. We need to fight them with the weapons of the Word of God!
