The Smart Planner’s Guide To Corporate Parties

If you’ve been to enough corporate parties, you’ll have come away with one indisputable truth – you never want to go to another corporate party. In truth, these get-togethers aren’t very fun & tend to do more to chip away at morale than boost it. An even bigger downer is knowing that the someone who put it all together really tried to do a good job.

So, what makes these corporate affairs so unpopular? Well, it really has to do with the purpose of the party. What are you trying to convey to attendees? How much attention is being paid to non-verbal cues in the details? Does your idea of a fun time jive at all with your employees? These are tough questions to ask, mostly because they require businesses to assess how well they know their own people.

But for the corporate planner(s) in charge of getting it all together, the job at hand is one that is equal parts of meticulous attention to detail, putting one’s self in the shoes of others, and crossing your fingers, hoping it all goes well. Oftentimes, though, ‘going well’ becomes well-enough, which is a real shame. It’s 2021 & a time when a lot of people are starting to rethink the way they do things. Why not look at corporate party planning in a very different way?

This party-planning renaissance starts with getting some basics down. For example:

Know Your Budget: It seems like common sense to figure out your operating budget, but you’d be surprised how far planning gets. In fact, venue managers everywhere bemoan the amount of bartering & bargaining planners try to engage in simply because they planned the perfect party AND THEN realized how much it would all cost.

Get Some Numbers: Aside from budget, the most important number you should get as early as possible is the number of attendees expected for an event. This way, you can really hammer out things like food, beverages, and the square footage of a venue best suited for your event.

Consider Any Movement: You may actually start thinking beyond the traditional hotel ballroom for your next corporate party. Good for you! Look at cities that offer not only cool venues but also great off-site areas. Milling around & exchanging smalltalk should be left at the watercolor…back at the office. This is a party, remember? Make it fun & see where you can get the most out of your event.

Dress Code: When you think of a corporate environment, especially the clothing, you have images of suits & power suits, neckties, and L’Eggs (remember those?!?). So, does the idea of a corporate party that requires a black tie dress code feel, well, fun? No, so it might be best to think of an event outside of work as being a little more relaxed. Maybe going with a recreational environment & a staff/employee t-shirt might be a cool change of pace. Also, instead of the usual “meh” event mixer, try going with fun backyard games that let attendees just hang out.

While corporate parties will vary between companies, one of the biggest drivers for planner should be as follows: know your “box” then think outside of it. These types of shindigs are supposed to be about building a team & getting folks on the same page. You don’t want to put together a party that makes everyone groan. The corporate world can sometimes get bogged down by things like branding & strategizing. More importantly, they do so without understanding that there is one thing at the heart of this business speak – people. So, give the people what they want AND need as you plan.
