Sadly, many gun accidents occur when children felt peer pressure and unsafely handle a gun. To avoid this, practice simulating situations of peer pressure for your child. Role play a teen who is trying to get your child to handle the gun. Try to make the situation seem as real as possible, and encourage your child to practice his or her skills to get out of the dangerous situation. Your child may feel embarrassed about role playing gun safety scenarios, but remind him or her that it’s vitally important to remember how to handle a dangerous situation dealing with guns.

Test Your Child

You can even do a practice run and test how your child reacts. Just place a realistic replica of a gun somewhere in the open in your house and see if your child comes forward to tell you about it. If not, then he or she may need more practice and education on gun safety. Use this as a teaching and learning experience.

Always Ask

You can’t be with your child 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. It’s just not possible. So, you need to make sure you ask your child’s friends’ parents if they have guns in the home. Also, review gun safety with your children before they play at friends’ homes. If the friends’ parents have guns in the home, ask how they store the guns. If you are not comfortable with how they reply, then have the friends come to your house instead.
