How to Hit Tennis Forehand Like a Pro Player
By Terri Duncan June 07, 2021
The forehand is one of the most basic and widely used strokes in tennis. It is the dream of every new tennis player to learn to hit forehand like professional players like Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams, and Novak Djokovic.
I have seen many tennis beginners struggling on the forehand and taking more than expected time to master this stroke. They all made the most common mistake; they use the full movement of their hands, which is wrong because the forehand is something related to specific hand movements.
In the longer run, this wrong movement can lead to wrist and elbow problems like tennis elbow. We must tackle this problem from the start and properly learn the forehand stroke.
This problem motivates me to write forehand learning techniques in depth to help all new players from the day first.
In this article, I am going to share all forehand tips and techniques that I learned from different coaches and my observations. Let’s learn without any delay.
How to Have a Perfect Tennis Forehand?
No matter if it’s groundstroke, slice, volley, or forehand, the key point is “Practice, Practice, and Practice”. However, a practice still needs the right direction to have the right skill in a shorter time.
The first thing you have to pay full attention to is to have the right grip. The second thing is the way you stand because your stance determines the power and consistency of your forehand that you are going to hit.
Power is also linked to the right kind of tennis racquet. I believe you have already selected a powerful racquet or you can generate body power in case you are an experienced player.
When you have maintained a proper stance, make sure you have the racquet’s backside facing towards the incoming tennis ball so that the ball hits right in the center of the sweet spot.
The Right Grip for the Right Forehand
The most commonly used grip for a perfect forehand is the Eastern grip. In this grip, you have to hold the racquet’s handle in such a way that your hand’s flat is parallel to the strings. It’s not difficult to have this grip, but having it in the right way is most important.
Another benefit of this grip is that you can easily add topspin to your forehand if you are fond of spin strokes.
On the other hand, if you are an experienced or mid-level player then select semi-eastern grip instead of Eastern grip. I suggest this grip for advanced players because this grip is quite challenging to hold during the game.
The benefit of a semi-eastern grip is that it adds precision to the shot along with power.
The Right Stance
After the grip, the stance is another most vital factor to hit a perfect forehand stroke. To improve your stance, you have to do a lot of footwork along with your other drills. When the ball is coming towards you, stand in such a way that your knees are slightly bent so that you can bounce a little bit when hitting the ball.
Hitting Point
Having optimal time to hit the ball is very important. It should neither be too early or too late. In both cases, there are chances that you put unnecessary pressure on your forearm and elbow which can lead to arm problems in the longer run.
Hit the ball when the distance between the ball and your racquet is around 1 foot
The three most important things when hitting a perfect forehand are; the right stance, the right grip, and the right time to hit the tennis ball.
I do hope you have got the point that I am trying to explain and you must have learned the right way to hit a forehand.
