The Call to Adventure
I have recently found a Samuel L. Jackson meme that actually made me laugh. It was a meme from Pulp Fiction regarding the, “Mmm-mh now thats a tasty beverage” line from the movie. For some reason, it made me think about another thing that Jules said. He told his partner, Vincent Vega that he was going to walk the earth, like Kane from Kung-Fu. getting in adventures, until God puts him where he should be (I apologize for the profanities in the video).
The funny part about that clip to me is the part about getting in adventures. One rarely knows they are in an adventure until after the adventure is over. Most of the time in a real-life adventure, it is uncomfortable, a distraction, an inconvenience, dangerous with even possible lethal consequences. I guess that is why movies are such a popular medium, because they on the screen are being shot at, in a fight with a bad guy, or they have to disarm the bomb, not me! I am sure even the real Samuel L. Jackson would not want to be in such situations. I am sure the closest he would want to be to fighting aliens would be in a movie, like the Avengers. The people who really do those things end up with PTSD and other problems! There is training for becoming a soldier but there is not training for becoming a regular person again. This is wrong!
Yet, the Lord calls us to follow Him and allow Him to lead us to uncomfortable, inconvenient, even possibly dangerous situations. You maybe called to go on a long journey and/or be a soldier or a policeman, you maybe called to just sit and talk to someone who you just don’t like and/or experience a sickness, celibacy, or something else you just do not want in life. All of these and many more may be callings from the Lord. It may be all part of the adventure!
As believers we are called to say, ‘Here am I send me Lord!’ However, it is rarely easy, convenient, or safe. We rarely have the strength to do it. However, we are not meant to do these things on our own strength or ability. The Lord has the grace and strength to fill us to get us to accomplish His will. We try to do it on our own strength to our peril and guarantee that we will fail.
Philippians 4:13 I can do all this through him who gives me strength.
