SPORTS: One Event One Big Impact by Brad Weisman
The outdoor industry continues to evolve as people look for a place to relieve themselves of stress. A hike can often allow for people to “think” about what is going on their lives. You don’t just have to be on a football or soccer field these days. We live in a time where it is about getting your mind off of the worlds challenges. One company years ago showed me what that means. Marmot historically has been one of the larger companies in the outdoor space. Additionally, they are philanthropic. I had to share an experience I had at the Marmot headquarters years ago I will never forget.
Back in 2003 I interviewed for a job out in Santa Rosa, California. I hopped on a plane in Chicago and flew several hours away to Northern California. Santa Rosa is a sweet Sonoma County spot and easy to embrace. It felt right….the air smelled right……and the way I felt was so right. However, it was many miles away from where I grew up and a world of difference in terms of topography and cultural vibe. All in all I was digging it and I truly had no separation anxiety. For the first time in my life I felt no signs of being home sick. Did I mention I was already in my late 30’s.
The next morning I left the quaint hotel La Rosa in Santa Rosa for an interview with the product development team at Marmot Mountain Works. Randy V picked me up and it was like we had known each other for years. Yep….he had the cool outdoorsy Volvo wagen and that cool bay area presence. The conversation had continuity and the comfort grew as I embraced the company culture in all of 3 seconds. It was a passionate group and completely understood what it meant to live in a world of work life balance. Was it the industry or was it the leadership that created this culture that was inclusive to LIVING.
I always knew Marmot was a pioneer in the outdoor industry, however I learned quickly they had pioneered how a company treats the people that have helped build a dynasty.
One thing is for sure and that is Marmot and Randy had an impact on me I have never forgotten. The job was offered to me, but I was far to homesick to take it. However, I have not forgotten that experience. I think it is safe to say some companies are a step beyond their product lines. Like I said, I will never forget that day and it has been 12 years. I remember every detail, but mostly I remember a group of people focused on an end goal that was bigger than sales. They are a people company….that just so happens to understand product. However, they put the people first. Easily the biggest lesson of my career today.
