Perfectionists, Prudes, and Promises
Don’t you hate perfectionists?
All through college and graduate school I got on-campus jobs with women who no one else wanted to work with. No one wanted to work with them because for them, nothing was good enough. They were perfectionists. But even many years later, I am still surrounded by perfectionists. I knew a woman in my last class who probably wrote her name five times on any form just for it to be perfect. I have always been surrounded by perfectionists. I am partly thankful for it because it made me better. However, I am also partly not thankful for it as, as I said, no one else wanted to work with them for that reason.
Perfection is something that I aspire to in many aspects of my life. Yet when it comes to spiritual things I get a bit confused. I know that God does not expect me to be able to be the same as Jesus. Yet I know we are supposed to aspire to be like Him. What would Jesus do? This question has always seemed to be something I was not capable of doing. Yet, I want more love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, faithfulness, goodness, and self-control. I want the faith, hope and love that comes from the Master of the Universe. I want to laugh and be happy and have fun AND feel God’s delight. I want my cake and I want to eat it too!!
As Paul said, we need to let go of the things that so easily ensnare us and keep going in an upwardly direction. Do you have a sin in your life that keeps you from God’s best? Something that you laugh at and say, “Oh it is not such a bad thing! Ha Ha!” Maybe you are like Homer Simpson who says to himself, “come on, I want to be good, but I am not running for Jesus!”. I think we all have. We all have things in our lives that hold us back from perfection. We all have things that hold us back from doing everything God wants us to do and being all that He wants us to be.
I have a surprise for you, even if we were to address these issues, we still would not be perfect or at His level. I am thankful for that. I don’t want to be a boring prude. Yet Jesus was perfect and He never was a boring prude.
If I were to open my heart to the Lord and give these sins to Him, He still promises to meet my needs with good things. It would clear the way for God to do more with you, for you to see situations and people and things the way God wants you to, and to have more of the things that God wants you to have. When we see things the way the Lord sees them, then we can ask and it will be given because our hearts will want the same things that God wants for us!
If you do not believe ME that is okay. But take God at His word and remind Him of it. Remind Him that this is a promise that He made:
Isaiah 55:2: Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and you will delight in the richest of fare.
