Devotional 10/24: Its Hip to be Sad, Nihilistic, and Lost!

Hey, its hip to view the world as dark, post-secular, meaningless, purposeless, and full of isolation! It is the sign of a true artist, right? And if you are good-looking or have money, you are not just a boorish, self-absorbed, pessimist. Girls think you are misunderstood and noble and they want to change you!

So many films and songs and other works of art are just about that today. Personally, I can tell you that many films are trying to capture a sense of isolation and sadness and desolation. Just some recent ones are: Ghost in the Shell, Blade Runner 2049, the Maze Runner series, the Hunger Games series, Snow Piercer, and others. Some of these films have made a lot of money. This of course, means a lot of people have gone to see them. Do they see them because they can relate to them or do they want to relate to them? Who knows.

Maybe musicians are more affected by their depressing music than actors/writers/directors are affected by their films? Regarding musicians, so many artists were in fact, unable to crawl out of the hole caused by their music. The desire to spend one’s days in a hole glorifying depression and being alone is an evil trap that exacts a heavy toll on you and those who love you.

Some may argue that the most intelligent people are depressed and that therefore is cool. However according to the following website http://treat-depression.com/intelligent-people-depressed, intelligent people are not usually depressed because they are intelligent but because they lack social skills for dealing with people.

However, being down the hole of isolation and depression and being misunderstood does not make you a great artist or musician or mean that you will be able to get a date.

That hole has a name. It is called, ennui. Ennui is “a feeling of listlessness and dissatisfaction arising from a lack of occupation or excitement” according to the Google dictionary.

I think that as believers we are not called to be living a life that glorifies the pain and suffering that the world can bring. We are to be living a live of faith in the Lord’s goodness, the path He has given us, and His accomplishments for us. Believe me, I can list many things from my life that I have been given to deal with that will shock you. However, I want to have faith that the Lord knows that list a lot better than me. I want to have faith that He is keeping the tally and will make the devil return me 7x for everything that devil has taken from me, that’s biblical!!!

I have had things stolen from me by the devil. Regarding stealing, Proverbs 6:30-31 says:

30People do not despise a thief if he steals to satisfy his hunger when he is starving. 31Yet if he is caught, he must pay sevenfold, though it costs him all the wealth of his house.

Now your professor may tell you that God does not exist and it is all just a random occurrence. Someone may tell you that it is brave to look at the void and tell yourself that there is nothing there. However, I want to live on the promise that my Lord gave me about never leaving or forsaking me.

As I said before, life can suck. People die. Diseases can pop out of nowhere. People you trust cheat and steal and lie and disappoint you. Circumstances can seem made to thwart just you and leave you on your knees.

But as hard as live can be, we are called to faith, hope and love. and these have made more artists than cynicism, despair, and hatred.

Isaiah 5:20 Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!
