Women and Family: Be Careful What You Share by Brad Weisman

Today over 1.5 million people on average log onto Facebook daily. This is a 13% increase of active users from the previous year before. 68% of users of Facebook are daily user’s vs going on monthly. What does this tell you? Well, there is a ton of public activity on the platform on a regular basis.

As a result, this means moms….dads….and their kids have to use this powerful tool with significant responsibility. Sure, you can connect with old friends…make some new ones…and maybe interact with the people you work with, however with that comes a responsibility. We often see people use FB to post for bragging rights by an event in their life. They post to talk about a topic that may be controversial and clearly many users use FB to pose their opinion. Posting is not the real problem, however the audience viewing the post is where things get dicey. What does “dicey” mean in this context? Well, the audience viewing your post might not see or understand what you are communicating. As a result, your post just may define something about you that was misunderstood. It is so critical we all think about what we put out there and how it just might impact others. We should post with great caution……be mindful of others….and ultimately really think about what we are putting out there.

As much as we need to be considerate about what we post, we also have to be mindful of who we engage with. As users of FB we have the right to engage with all kinds of people which creates a kind of freedom that is blessing and a curse. However, the world we live in today has become far more dangerous and has created more opportunities for criminal behavior. Facebook has become a tool for predators to build trust in young minds at the ease of a digital path. If someone tries to connect with you that you do not know, it is all the more reason to not accept as a friend. From my experience, people you don’t know engaging on FB have a motive. It is a motive that they will benefit from and perhaps will affect your comfort on FB.

Facebook is a fascinating tool; however, we need to use it responsibly. Posting is a ton of fun, however what we most and who sees it can be damaging if used the wrong way. Let’s all take a stab at leveraging Facebook with a responsible idea in mind. If we start responsible we e can expect less concerns and feel far more secure as users and as a society.
