SPORTS: What is Age? by Brad Weisman

Not Everyone made the Olympic team this year, however some came back from where they started. KC Boutiette has participated in several Olympics in his early years. He qualified for trials this year, but did not make the team. 4 Olympics later and now it is time to put the skates down. He will cheer his team on and still in many ways represent the US and what athletes should be. At 48 years old he has had a career that has been a life time and nothing to be ashamed of.

In the US we see little when it comes to inline skating let alone the major marathon races that take place all over Europe. The sport has a presence outside of the US where athletes become celebrities that gain popularity for their accomplishments in these insane races. Now, as we look into the US what does inline really mean…..it means you are so friggin good at it that you figure out a way to transition it to the ice. From the ice you start training for the Olympics and set yourself up for worldly visibility. KC Boutiette is not only a freak of athletic nature, but poised when on the ice to do what few can.

Over the years there has been a lineage of skaters that were riding the wave on the inline circuit and converted to the ice. Chad Hedrick was one of those guys, however KC is one that was talked about regularly. He could strap on inline skates and go the distance and still go when the road appeared to never end. It is as if his VO2 crushed whatever Lance Armstrong may have had at his peak. KC just doesn’t get tired and still maintains his stride and he is no longer a young pup.

He was embarking on trying to make history and jockey into a position for the US Olympic speed skate team at 48. Not earning a

spot on the US Speed Skate team hardly makes this hero a failure. In fact, he is truly a hero if anything.

KC is in training…..being a father……running a custom cycling shoe company…..and has linear focus. He is far from over and will make history. Don’t kid yourself or laugh…there is nothing to laugh about, but pay attention to this guy. His age is hardly defining his resting pulse. Go get emm KC!!!
