Wal-Mart Brings Its Online Grocery Pickup to Amazon’s Backyard
(Bloomberg) —Your move, Bezos.
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. plans to open its 1,000th online grocery pickup location in a very strategic location: the Seattle area, hometown of rival Amazon.com Inc. The brick-and-mortar giant is letting customers in that area order food online and then retrieve items at their local store without leaving their cars.
Wal-Mart also will give away Google Home connected devices to the first 250 customers who use the free pickup service, a business that the company has expanded aggressively over the past year. It’s aiming to counter a push by Amazon Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos into the supermarket business. The e-commerce behemoth purchased Whole Foods Market last month and has been building out its grocery delivery offering.
