Devotional 8/2: Wisdom From the Westboro Baptist Church

Please Note: I will return to my Those Who Stood Up and Signed series next week!

Living here in the Midwest, I am not used to people being very aggressive on the highways. However, I have to say that in the past few years, there seems to have been a real increase in that in the Chicagoland area. I have to confess that I am not totally immune to it. When screamed at, I have a tendency to scream back. I know that this is not “right”. I realize that a soft word turns away wrath. However, oftentimes I am afraid that it just makes me look like a pushover and therefore I meet wrath with wrath. I also believe that there might be a way to do that in love. However, I oftentimes forget that.

Online, I have a bad tendency to seek it out. I challenge people on YouTube to prove evolution to me. Then I take pleasure in poking holes in their reasoning and the facts. I know Jesus wants me to be more interested in building relationships and sharing His love than cutting people’s bad ideas down.

I know the Good Book encourages us to love our enemies and pray for them. I wish that I could be a person who learns from the evil of others and not join others in their inappropriate behavior more.  Hey, its something I and the Lord are working on!

The Westboro Baptist Church knows a lot about confrontation. Their style of confrontation is a black eye and embarrassment for all people of faith. However, I would like to share a video of a woman who learned a lot from them about the true meaning of loving others and not judging others and becoming non-confrontational. A true loving and non-judgemental attitude leads people you disagree with towards the Lord!

Matthew 5:23-24 So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.
