Diver dies in attack by shark larger than the boat trying to rescue her : A Well Thought Out Scream by James Riordan

Everyone has a favorite line from the movie Jaws and, for a lot of people it’s when Roy Scheider sees the shark for the first time and says, “We’re going to need a bugger boat.  Well, just such a thing happened this week in Australia when a sixty year olf woman was killed by a shark who actually turned out to be bigger than the boat that was trying to rescue her.

It was the second deadly shark attack in Australia in less than a week.  The 60-year-old woman was diving with a man at a popular dive spot in the northern Perth suburb of Mindarie when the shark attacked, Western Australia state Police Inspector Danny Mulligan said.  “The man said that he felt something go past him and he turned around,” Mulligan told reporters. “He didn’t see the shark at that stage, but he felt it better to surface.”

When the man reached the surface, he noticed commotion in the water, Mulligan said. Another boat arrived and the fishermen on board pulled him out of the water. They then spotted the woman and saw that she had suffered severe injuries.

The man was able to get back into his own boat and pull the woman from the water, but her wounds proved fatal, Mulligan said.  The fishermen said the shark was larger than their 5.3-meter (17-foot) boat, Mulligan said.  Beaches in the area were closed and the state fisheries department was trying to find and trap the shark.

On Tuesday, a surfer’s leg was bitten off by a shark about 100 kilometers (60 miles) south of where Sunday’s attack occurred. Ben Gerring, 29, died from his injuries on Friday.  The surfer was reportedly attacked by a great white shark while surfing off the Falcon Bay beach in Mandurah in Western Australia. The beach was closed following the accident on Tuesday (May 31) and after reports emerged that a great white shark was seen in the waters. Authorities reportedly caught a 4.2m-long great white shark a day after the incident close to the site where Gerring was attacked, but could not confirm if it was the shark responsible for the fatal attack on the surfer. Fisheries Australia issued a statement after capturing

An inspection of Gerring’s damaged surfboard showed a white shark was responsible. The fisheries department trapped and killed a large shark on Wednesday, but don’t know if it was the same shark that attacked Gerring.

The beach was closed following the accident on Tuesday (May 31) and after reports emerged that a great white shark was seen in the waters. Authorities reportedly caught a 4.2m-long great white shark a day after the incident close to the site where Gerring was attacked, but could not confirm if it was the shark responsible for the fatal attack on the surfer.

shark4 Fisheries Australia issued a statement after capturing the shark that it was caught because it fitted the criteria of a hazardous shark, but not because it was thought to have been responsible for the attack on Gerring. However, Lynn MacLaren, the WA Greens MP, criticised Fisheries Australia for not conducting a formal autopsy on the shark before killing it. The Guardian quoted MacLaren as telling RTR FM in Perth on Thursday that the usual procedure required them “to prove” if the shark was involved in that particular attack. “They went out, they caught a very, very large shark, possibly a great white, and that shark was possibly in the area a day after a surfer was attacked,” MacLaren reportedly said.

Gerring, a 29-year-old fly in-fly out worker, was struggling for life at Royal Perth hospital after being admitted there with his right leg missing from above the knee. He was rescued by his fellow surfers and was immediately attended by paramedics on the beach before being shifted to the hospital.

Gerring’s family said he would have not ventured into the sea if he were aware of a shark sighting in the area earlier that day. They said that the unfortunate surfer had recently found out that his fiancee, Jasmine Boyer, was pregnant with his child.

His family has thanked everyone involved in his rescue and treatment at Royal Perth hospital. “The bravery and efforts of his rescuers and the care provided by the doctors and nurses has been amazing. We would also like to thank family and friends for their messages of love and support. They are greatly appreciated,” they were quoted as saying.
