Devotional 2/10: The Huff Post Gets It Right

One of the main motivations for me starting this website is the website known as the Huffington Post. In my opinion it is so biased and slanted it just makes me laugh sometimes. Other times it makes me really angry. It seems to me they just skip anything in the news which does not support their liberal agenda. And people call Fox News biased!

I just recently went there to see how it was handling the latest election news. I suspected that it was saying that Bernie Sanders or Hillary Clinton had already won the elections. I also wanted to see how it was handling the fact that many Americans seem to actually like Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio. It was there that I found the following article:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/ben-mann/loving-my-enemies-my-runi_b_9167612.html?utm_hp_ref=queer-voices

This article describes a man’s encounter with Kim Davis who was on the same airline jet with him. He is a Christian and a homosexual. He wanted to honor the Lord more than he wanted to push his political agenda. Some may even say that he wanted to honor the Lord and his beliefs more than he wanted to do what was, “politically correct”. Kim Davis wanted to honor the Lord and her beliefs too. This was true whether or not you or I or anyone, agrees with her actions.

However, my point is not to revisit her decision or the consequences of it. Nor is my point to discuss again the importance of religious rights. My point is to share with you this man’s response and to encourage you to have a similar response when confronted by a perspective that you do not agree with or agrees with you.

According to the article, he was tempted to pay her back for the pain that he and all of his community have experienced but the Lord got a hold of him. He responded thusly:

“….Waving my hand in the air. “Hi, Miss Davis? Can I take a picture with you?” She agreed. We leaned in for a selfie — the most modern human activity of which I can think. I quickly stated, “Miss Davis, my name is Ben. A lot of what you’ve done has hurt many of my fellow LGBT Christians and beyond, but I want you to know that I offer you the Peace of Christ.” I extended my hand so as to shake hers….”

He definitely agreed to disagree. The Lord has commanded us to love our enemies, real or perceived. The Lord has commanded us to love the sinners and hate those things which separate us from Him. Let us continue to pursue this through respecting and loving others who may not agree with us and/or our enemies, just as this man did.

However, if you want to think that is easy, remember this image:

Luke 23:…33When they came to the place called The Skull, there they crucified Him and the criminals, one on the right and the other on the left. 34But Jesus was saying, “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.” And they cast lots, dividing up His garments among themselves. 35And the people stood by, looking on. And even the rulers were sneering at Him, saying, “He saved others; let Him save Himself if this is the Christ of God, His Chosen One.”…
